South East Group Knocks Umahi Over Northern Governor’s Rejection Of Zoning

The South East Revival Group (SERG) has slammed Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The group said in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Chief Willy Ezugwu, on Wednesday that it was “following with keen interest the political developments, intrigues, and politicking ahead of the 2023 presidential election,” adding that it was surprised when the governor defected to the APC.

SERG made the statement in response to the northern governors’ rejection of a power shift to the south.

Remember that the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF) stated on Monday that the south’s insistence on producing Nigeria’s next president violates the provisions of the constitution.

Southern governors recently requested that their region provide Nigeria’s next president.

“We had requested that the governor of Ebonyi State provide the people of the southeast a cogent reason why he abandoned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC,” SERG said in a statement.

“It was not that Igbos despise the APC, but we needed to comprehend the political maneuvers of south-east leaders since all zones have now demonstrated that they have their own interests.

“Recent comments attributed to Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi indicate that he was doing everything he could to impress the north in expectation of being preferred for the APC presidential nomination in 2023.

“The governor had gone so far as to reject the Southern Governors Forum resolution on the prohibition on open grazing and had recently prayed to God to provide Nigeria another president like Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

“He was also described as opposing a court rule requiring states to collect Value Added Tax (VAT).

“All of this, we believe, is an obvious patronage attempt to appease the North at the expense of his people being massacred by armed herdsmen in order to increase their numbers.

All of this, we believe, is an obvious patronage attempt to satisfy the North at the risk of his people being massacred by armed herdsmen in order to further his own selfish aspirations.

“It is unfortunate that the governor’s attempt to appease northern interests was insufficient to persuade the Northern Governors to support a power shift that would open the way for him to emerge as the APC presidential candidate, as he may have anticipated.

“As a result, our demand for a clear explanation for Governor Umahi’s desertion remains unsatisfied. We must be persuaded that he is on the right track.”
