See The Difference Of Now And The Last Time Nnamdi Kanu Appeared In Court

Present at the Abuja federal high court today so that his trial could continue, with regards to the seven- count charges slammed on him by the federal government through the office of the attorney general.

It is good to recall that Nnamdi Kanu was previously facing trial in the country before he jumped bail and fled the country. He was later re- arrested and brought back to the country to continue his trial. Though he has been in the custody of the department of state security (DSS).

However, there is a noticeable difference from the above picture of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’ s appearance in court today, and when he first appeared in court after he was extradited to the court on June 29th, 2021.

From the above picture extracted from the Vanguard Newspaper, when Nnamdi Kanu last appeared in court on June 29th, 2021, he was in handcuffs unlike today being 21st October 2021, he was not in handcuffs.

Hence, why was he not in handcuffs in the pictures shared online by various verified media outlets unlike on June 29th, 2021 when he first appeared in court?

Firstly, it is good to recall that the first time Nnamdi Kanu appeared in court on June 29th, 2021 was just a few days after he was extradited to the country. Hence, it could be said that as at that time, proper logistics and security details have not been assigned to his movements from the DSS facility to the court, as such, he was left in handcuffs.

Also, a quick search revealed that the decision to keep a defendant out of handcuffs in a court is a standard procedure and a part of a defendant’ s right to a fair trial, unless they’ re showing that they’ re physically a threat in the courtroom. Hence, in this case, it could be safe to say that with the presence of the DSS and other security agents in and around the court premises, Nnamdi Kanu possibly does not pose any physical threat in the court. The court has however adjourned the case till November 10th.
