Residents And Motorists Lament As Collapsed Bridge Cuts off Towns From Ado- Ekiti {Photos}

Residents of Ijan Ekiti, in Ekiti State’ s Gbonyin Local Government Area, have raised the alarm after a connecting bridge collapsed, shutting the town and other communities in the council off from Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

Due to excessive rains and subsequent erosion, the bridge in front of Saint Paul’ s Anglican Primary School in the town’ s core fell on Saturday.

The tragic incident occurred just two weeks after the town’ s king and Onijan of Ijan Ekiti, Oba Oyewole Fadahunsi, passed away following a 19- year reign.

Major cities, as well as those traveling out of the state to Ondo and Kogi states and the Federal Capital Territory, have found it impossible to get to Ado Ekiti as a result of the incident.

The bridge, which was built during the old Ondo State’ s military rule, was claimed to have collapsed due to continual erosion and water overflow along that axis.

Another issue that has been recognized as a contributing factor to the collapse is the recent increase in heavy- duty vehicle traffic along the Ado- Ijan- Omuo- Kabba Abuja federal road.

Because of the event, which disrupted the free flow of traffic along that route, motorists had to use alternate highways to get from Ijan to Iluomoba and then to Irun in Ondo State.

Bamisile is a member of the National Assembly’ s Lower Chamber, representing the Gbonyin/Ekiti East/Ensure Federal Constituency, of which Ijan Ekiti is one of the constituent towns.

High Chief Kehinde Ojo, the Osodi of Ijan Ekiti, expressed regret over the situation and urged the federal and state governments to rebuild the collapsed bridge as soon as possible to restore normalcy.

Currently, traffic on that route has been disrupted and impacted. Because some of the vehicles transporting agricultural products to market centers are disrupted, economic activity is also being hampered.

In light of the current state of the road, one should consider the environmental risk that the section offers to our citizens due to its location in the heart of town. Erosion is destroying the environment, and this should not be allowed to continue.

Com. Talabi Adeyemo, a member of the National Union of Route Transport Workers (NURTW) who plies the Ado- Ijan- Ikare road, expressed sorrow that the collapsed bridge and the poor quality of the road had reduced their income and caused massive vehicle damage.
