One Future Crisis That May Further Divide PDP Ahead Of 2023

The leadership of the PDP may not be able to foresee a possible future crisis that is capable of further polarising the party which is merely trying to wrest power from the All Progressives Congress. Although the party faces the current reality, one obtainable issue would crop up and tear the party into factions.

The party National Executive Council held a meeting yesterday. And some cogent matters were discussed and resolved while the party is also getting ready for the bigger challenge in 2023. After the meeting, the party leaders resolved that the northern region should produce the next national chairman.

The decision to zone the vacant seat of the national chairman was good. Of course, Mr. Uche Secondus is from the southern and his successor must definitely come from north. So, it is commendable that the party leaders realised this and made this their decision based on it. It is now certain that a northerner would soon occupy the national chairman’s office at the Wadata Plaza in Abuja.

But crisis would start when a northerner wins the ticket of the PDP for the presidency. Note that the party National Executive Council has thrown the race open which means any member can contest. The party would be divided if the northern region takes both the national chairman and presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party.

Normally, the PDP would have put the race for presidential ticket in 2019 into consideration. The struggle was mainly among the trio of Bukola Saraki, Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto State governor) and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar (former vice president). The three men are from Kwara, Sokoto and Adamawa.

Essentially, the PDP leaders could have zoned the ticket of the party to the southern region if it considers what may happen in future. Of course, there is apparently no politician in the southern region who can slug it out with the former vice president. It therefore means that Atiku Abubakar may be on the verge of representing the PDP again.

Mr. Doyin Okupe, one of the aides of former president Goodluck Jonathan, has already warned that the PDP may lose the 2023 general elections if the party picks its representative from north. He has given his advice and stated what may happen if the party does otherwise.

Recall that Mr. Dave Umahi primarily left the PDP because he observed that the party had not done enough to help the Igbo people actualise their dreams of leading the country. If a northerner emerges again, more politicians who share the belief of Dave Umahi would find their ways out of the opposition party.
