She admitted manslaughter by diminished responsibility after Reid was found critically injured at their £500,000 home in Bridgend last August.

Cardiff crown court heard she suffered psychosis and psychotic depression at the time.

Prosecutor Michael Jones QC told Cardiff crown court they accepted the plea after two psychiatrists’ reports into Steele’s mental health.

Judge Michael Fitton QC said: “I entirely support the view taken. The nature and extent of her illness is obvious to anyone who has begun to read those reports.”

Steele was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on May 3.

Judge Fitton told her: “I have read the reports and I understand why the prosecution have accepted the plea of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility.

“There is a lot of work for you with the psychiatrists and I would urge you to fully co-operate.

“But I want to know a lot more about you and I want to hear from the doctors what is best for your long term position.

“I would expect that they will be asking for hospital orders to be made and where you might be best placed long-term.”

Reid’s family said last year: “He was a super, super-happy, gorgeous, wonderful and intelligent little boy who lit up everyone’s lives.

“He loved the garden and the beach, picking raspberries and going for walks collecting shells.

“He was a very chatty little boy and would happily speak to anyone.”

They said his favourite things included Bob the Builder, Winnie the Pooh, the beach, diggers, and nature, adding: “We miss him with every fibre of our beings.

“Reid never experienced evil or pain in his little life, he was so adored by all of us. We miss him every single day.”

Neighbours left flowers and cuddly toys including a lion, a gorilla, and a rabbit on a site near the house at the time.

One tribute called Reid a “precious little boy”.
