2 possible reasons Igboho’s aides are unable get sureties 6 days after they were granted bail

On August 4th, 2021, a media report had it that a Federal High Court in Abuja granted bail to the 12 applicants arrested by the Department of State Security (DSS), during a raid at the Oyo State residence of Yoruba nation agitator Chief Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho.

The names of these 12 aides of Sunday Igboho are Abdullateef Ademola Onaolapo, Amudat Habibat Babatunde, Tajudeen Irinloye, Diekola Jubril Ademola, Abideen Shitu, Jamiu Noah Oyetunji, Ayobami Donald, Uthman Opeyemi Adelabu, Olakunle Oluwapelumi, Raji Kazeem, Taiwo Opeyemi Tajudeen, and Bamidele Sunday. These 12 aides of Sunday Igboho were arrested on July 1st, 2021, after a raid at the Oyo state residence of Sunday Igboho whereby the DSS reported that seven AK-47 assault rifles, 30 fully charged AK-47 magazines, and 5,000 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition were discovered.

Hence, these aides were charged to court but later released on bail after they had spent five weeks in the custody of the Department of State Services. However, the ruling of Justice Obiora Egwuatu on the 4th of August 2021 gave conditions for those that will stand surety for these 12 aides that were granted bail.

According to Punch Newspapers, these are the two categories of the bail conditions: for the first eight aides, the condition is to get two sureties valued at N5m while the bail condition for the remaining four aides the DSS opposed their bail is N10m with two sureties. Also, the two sureties for the first eight aides must have valid means of identification and known addresses while that of the other four aides must get as surety a civil servant not less than Level 12 who is resident in Abuja.

Unfortunately, a recent report by Punch Newspaper revealed that these twelve aides of Sunday Igboho are still in DSS custody because their lawyer is unable to get sureties for them. According to the report, the lawyer to these aides Pelumi Olajengbesi stated that it has been difficult getting sureties for these detained aides of Sunday Igboho because a lot of persons would have come out as sureties but they were apprehensive.

However, there could still be two (2) other possible reasons these detained aides are yet to get sureties which their lawyer did not reveal.

1. The sureties risk possible sanctions if any of the aides flee.

This case is a case involving the federal government and thus protocols will be duly observed. Recall that the conditions for those to stand as sureties are valid identification cards and known addresses. Hence, these sureties will be properly known and in the event of any of these aides absconding, these sureties will risk being sanctioned.

It is good to note that these 12 aides are still subject to investigation and questioning hence, they should be available anytime they are needed. Therefore, how can these potential sureties ensure that the aides do not jump bail? This will be a very difficult task.

Recall that on November 23rd, 2020, Federal High Court in Abuja ordered that Senator Ali Ndume, should be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Center, following his inability to produce the former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, whom he stood surety for. This kind of sanction could be one of the reasons Igboho’s aides are unable to get sureties and are still in detention because a civil servant that stood surety and later on, is unable to provide any of the aides might risk being sanctioned.

2. The sureties might not want to become subjects to media scrutiny.

We are in an age of media publicity and this case is a case that is constantly gaining media attention. Hence, those that might want to stand surety to Sunday Igboho’s aides might lose interest due to the high level of media attention it might draw to them.

It is not out of place to state that some people prefer to live their quiet life outside media attention and as such might not want to get involved in this case by standing as surety. Media houses will want to get more information about those that would want to stand as sureties to these 12 aides of Sunday Igboho. View pictures in App save up to 80% data.

In summary, the lawyer must keep searching for possible sureties for these 12 aides so that they could be released from DSS detention. Also, the lawyer needs to assure those that would want to stand sureties for these aides that these aides have been properly advised never to nurture the intention of jumping bail.
