This season the seven places in European competitions traditionally reserved for English clubs are likely to all be allocated via league positions.
EFL and FA Cup places transferred

This is because Liverpool, who are guaranteed a top-five finish and qualification through league position for at least the UEFA Europa League, have won the EFL Cup, where the winners qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL).

That means the UECL place will go to the highest-placed club in the Premier League table not qualified for UEFA competition.

Liverpool also face Chelsea in the FA Cup final on 14 May, where the winners usually qualify for the UEFA Europa League.

While the third-placed Blues are not yet guaranteed a top-five finish, their current position makes them likely to qualify for at least the UEL.

The top four Premier League finishers qualify for the UEFA Champions League (UCL) group stage. If the season finished today, those spots would be taken by Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Liverpool and Man City will vie this week to reach this year’s UEFA Champions League final.

But, as they are guaranteed to finish in the top four, their qualifications for the UCL through their league position are not transferred to another team even if they win this season’s competition

Fifth place qualifies for the UEFA Europa League (UEL) group stage.

If Chelsea finish at least fourth, the UEL group-stage place reserved for the FA Cup winners will go to the sixth-placed team.

The team finishing seventh in the Premier League will therefore go into next season’s UEFA Europa Conference League.
Winning European trophies

West Ham United and Leicester City are also in the semi-finals of the UEL and UECL respectively.

If West Ham win the UEL, they would become the fifth Premier League team to qualify for the UCL group stage.

If they also finish in a Premier League position reserved for qualification for one of the three UEFA club competitions, that place would not be transferred to a club below the Hammers.

If the Hammers win the UEL and finish fifth or sixth, there will be one Premier League team in the UEL next term (the side who finish fifth or sixth) and one in the UECL (the team in seventh).

If West Ham win the UEL and end up in seventh, UEL spots would go to fifth and sixth place, with no English team in the UECL.

With Leicester facing an uphill task to finish in the top seven, if they win the UECL they would qualify for the UEL next season.
Nine clubs in Europe?

It is possible for there to be nine English clubs in UEFA competitions next season. For this to happen, West Ham must win the UEL and finish eighth or lower, while Leicester must win the UECL and finish eighth or lower.

That would leave five Premier League clubs in the UEFA Champions League (top four and West Ham), three in the UEFA Europa League (fifth, sixth and Leicester) and the seventh-placed club in the UECL.
