Former Nigerian senator, Dino Melaye on Wednesday, shared his opinion on why president Buhari rejected Electoral Bill.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari in December 2021, refused to approve the bill that was sent to his office by the national assembly. According to The Cable, the Nigerian national assembly on November 19, sent the electoral bill to the president for approval.

What is the electoral bill & why was it transmitted to the executive?

According to The Cable, the electoral bill is a revised version of the electoral act of 2010. The essence of the bill is to improve the conduct of elections in Nigeria and to give democracy a new meaning. The election bill as would give INEC the power to electronically transmit results and also allow parties to nominate candidates directly.

The bill was transmitted to the executive chamber in November 2021, after being revised by the national assembly.

After the bill was passed to the executive chamber, many members of the PDP alleged that the bill would not be signed by the president of Nigeria.

Reactions to the passage of the electoral bill to the executive arm of government

After the bill was passed to the president, the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, told president Buhari bro to give Nigeria democracy a new meaning by singing the bill. He alleged that the type of democracy practiced during the Anambra state election is what Nigerians need and that should be made possible through the passage of the bill.

Aside from Governor Wike, the PDP chapter in Kebbi state told president Buhari to give democracy a chance to thrive in Nigeria. The PDP chairman in the state, Ibrahim Usman Manzu, revealed that Nigerians would become better if such a bill is signed into law.

He also added that the issue of poverty and the bad government would reduce in Nigeria and the people would be able to experience what is called good government and good leadership.

Despite the reactions and beliefs of many people who reacted to the passage of the electoral bill, president Buhari on December 21, rejected the bill.

Why did President Buhari refuse to sign the electoral bill into law

President Muhammadu Buhari in December 2021, rejected the electoral bill. The president revealed that the country the direct primary is a violation of the fundamental rights of political parties in the country.

President Buhari believes that each political party should be allowed to choose any type of primary election they desire without being forced to do so. The president sent the bill back to the national assembly for revision.

The president also alleged that the process was too costly and the country does not currently have the security architecture to practice such a process.

Meanwhile, shortly after the president took the great step, the national assembly was told to overrun the decision of the president by signing the bill into law.

What national assembly was told to do after the bill was rejected by President Muhammadu Buhari

Nyesom Wike, PDP, and many other notable individuals told the national assembly to overrun the president’ s decision by looking for other ways to sign the electoral bill into law.

In reaction to the request tabled before the national assembly by Nigerians, the national assembly revealed that a sitting would take place in January to discuss the way forward on the electoral bill.

While rumors say that the lawmakers in the national assembly have started collecting signatures to overrun the decision of the president, the speaker of the house of representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila in an interview, revealed that he is not aware of such move but members of the house would resume in January to think of a solution to the problem.

What Dino Melaye said about the electoral bill and the decision of the president

A few weeks after the president of Nigeria refused to sign the bill into law, Dino Melaye revealed that such a step was taken out of fear of being defeated.

On Wednesday, January 12, Dino Melaye alleged that the real issue or reason why the president refused to sign the bill was due to the fear of electronic transmission of results.

He revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari and his people have no issues with direct primary but much attention was given to that area to distract Nigerians. Dino Melaye revealed that the real reason why President Buhari failed to sign the electoral bill into law was because of the electronic transmission of results.

He alleged that the bill would have been signed into law by the president if electronic transmission of results was not included in the act. Meanwhile, he urged the national assembly to do the needful and immediately work on the bill in other to transmit it back to the president for signing to avoid any complications in the future.
