Why Calabar Carnival Is Not Just The Place With The MOST BEAUTIFUL Women But Nigeria’s Largest Street Party

African cultures have had a massive impact on carnival celebrations around the world! They have contributed to the many different carnival music styles that developed from rhythmic drum beats including samba, soca and steelpan.

The bright colorful costumes that you see in Brazil or the Caribbean carnivals were also influenced by African slaves who used to dress in masks, feathers and other decorative items. Even many types of carnival dances developed from the African cultures.

One of such is thhe Calabar Festival is indisputably the biggest and longest multi-dimensional, multi-faceted tourism leisure and entertainment programme in West Africa. Thirty-two days of exciting events, colorful activities, and unprecedented yearly participation by millions of people from all over the world.

The Calabar Carnival started in 2004 by Governor Donald Duke of Cross River, as a way to promote tourism and improve the local economy

The Calabar Carnival is a fairly new addition to the annual festival calendar of Nigeria. It’s now held annually and is dubbed “Nigeria’s largest street party.” It is a month-long carnival that lasts from December 1 to 31 every year, and has a program of events including dancing, music, and other cultural events; something different every day. It’s a lovely celebration of Nigeria’s great cultural mosaic.

The carnival I was also declared by the then governor Mr. Donald Duke as an activity to mark Christmas celebration and he said his vision for creating the festival was to make Cross-River a home of tourism and hospitality in Nigeria and Africa. Over the years the quality of this festival keeps growing as it has currently become an international festival and Nigeria’s number one biggest carnival. It used to be a month-stretched event that usually start from the 1st of December until Benedict Ayade reduced it to two weeks when he was elected.

During the 2017 carnival, Governor Ayade said in his speech that the carnival is to showcase Africa as the richest continent and a blessed place where the young ones should be proud to belong. The carnival has always been a prospect one as the different competition takes place with huge cash prizes, the carnival has always been a colorful one.

Why do we celebrate the Calabar Carnival?

The Calabar Carnival was first proposed when the governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, had a vision of making the state a hub for tourism and hospitality in Nigeria and Africa, with a view towards celebrating aspects of local heritage and culture, and to promoting this culture to the wider world. Since then it’s taken off much more than anticipated, and has become “Nigeria’s biggest street party”!

How is the Carnival celebrated?

The programme of events at the carnival is drafted each year by the committee in charge of tourism and cultural activities and new initiatives are introduced every year, but there’s always a focus on local heritage and culture. Past events have included football competitions, music performance from both local and international artists, the annual Calabar Carnival itself, boat regattas, fashion shows, beauty pageants, traditional dancing, and even essay-writing competitions, all geared towards celebrating Nigerian culture!

The program is drafted each year by the committee in charge of tourism and cultural activities and new initiatives are introduced every year with different topics chosen each year to drive the carnival. In December 2009, Carnival Committee organized “Carnival Cup 2009”, a football competition amongst the five competing carnival bands – Seagull, Passion 4, Masta Blasta, Bayside and Freedom. These bands can be distinguished by their colors, The Seagull is Red band known as the most stylish and coordinated band, Passion 4 are also known as the Green band as well as the most successful band, Masta Blasta are the orange band as also, the largest band, Bayside are Blue band, and Freedom are Yellow.

The Festival also includes music performance from both local and international artists, the annual Calabar Carnival, Boat regatta, Fashion shows (introduced in 2016), Beauty pageant (Miss Africa introduced in 2016.

Christmas Village, traditional dances, and the annual Ekpe Festival is a yearly events that brings in thousands of tourists.

Other activities that make up this carnival include an essay writing competition that involves both secondary school and tertiary students. These competitions are designed to promote reading culture among the youths of the State as well as inculcating the carnival culture.

When is Calabar Carnival 2021?

When is the 2021 Calabar Carnival? The 2021 Calabar Carnival runs over the whole month December! Yes you heard that right its one whole month of celebrating that begins on the 1st December and finishes on New Year’s Eve the 31st December.

NOTE: This carnival can be cancelled or postponed at any time due to concerns over the spread of COVID-19. The organizes are monitoring the situation and will listen to advice from governments and public health organisations to ensure everyone’s safety.
