9 Crises Torn-States The APC Reconciliatory Committee Should Attend To Before The Convention

Ahead of its national convention, the ruling All Progressives Congress, the APC has instituted a reconciliatory committee to bring all warring factions of the party together.

This move was made by the Malam Buni-led caretaker committee as he tasked the panel to resolve all differences and heal all cracks emanating from the just concluded ward and local government congresses of the party.

Senator Abdullahi Adamu is the leader of the APC National Reconciliation Committee which is made up of 9-panel members.

One of the mandates of the committee was to make sure the APC is united before the general convention but that may seem a herculean task seeing a large number of factions and displeased members of the party across the country

In this article, we will be looking at 9 states where the party is currently at loggerheads.

Akwa Ibom

The battle is between the National Secretary of the APC Caretaker Committee, Senator John Akpanudoedehe and the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

The last ward congresses in the state were reportedly hijacked and members of Akpabio’s camp had reported that the whole process was hijacked by Udoedehe’s men. The state is getting prepared for the state congress and the tension is still on.

Abia State

In Abia State, a parallel congress was also organized as members loyal to the state chairman of the party, Chief Donatus Nwankpa and another rival chieftain Chief Ikechi Emenike differed on the conduct of the congress.

However, the LG congress Committee led by Israel Goli only supervised the congress conducted by the Chief Ikechi Emenike faction while the known state chairman, Chief Donatus Nwankpa, went ahead to conduct his own parallel congress.

The Chairman of the Congress Committee, Prof. Umar Katsayal narrowly escaped an attack by irate youths as he and his committee members were about to leave the party secretariat after the congresses.

Aggrieved party members had stormed the party secretariat demanding to have direct access to their ward congress materials while some chieftains like the senator representing Adamawa Central, Senator Aishatu Binani also stormed the party secretariat to kick against the process.

Bayelsa State

The faction led by Hon. Ebierien Fala had faulted the conduct of the congresses. They noted that there was a subsisting court order before the State High Court and Court of Appeal, sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State which sought to put a hold on all congresses of the party in the state.

The crisis is between members loyal to the former governor of the state and incumbent minister of state for petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylva and other APC stalwarts in the state

Going ahead with the congress, therefore, was a violation of the court order.

Enugu State

The Enugu state chapter of the party has been divided across factions as one group is loyal to the State Caretaker Committee chairman, Dr. Ben Nwoye, while the second group is loyal to the former senate president, Senator Ken Nnamani.

Due to this fracas, the congresses held in Enugu state produced different leadership structures in all 17 council areas of the state.

Delta state.

There is a subsisting court order stopping the congress from holding in the state but the APC has been torn between loyalty to the deputy senate president, Senator Ovie Omo Agege, and some other party chieftains like Chief Great Ogboru, Festus Keyamo, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, Chief Victor Ochei, and Mrs. Mariam Alli

Ekiti State

Gov Fayemi is in combat with a faction of the Asiwaju Tinubu’s presidential campaign group, SWAGA over the congresses organized in the state. SWAGA had gone to court to challenge the outcome of the ward congress held in the state.

Kwara State.

The APC faction in the state is also torn between loyalty to the Mister of Information, Lai Muhammed, and the governor of the state Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Lagos state

The state APC chapter is also in crisis as two factions of the party, the Tunde Balogun-led group and the Lagos4Lagos group also held parallel congresses across the 245 wards of the 20 local government areas of the state.

Recall the chairman of the APC caretaker committee and the Yobe state governor, Mala Buni, had announced that the success of the proposed National Convention will depend on how successful the Senator Abdullahi Adamu-led APC National Reconciliation Committee delivers on its assignment.

With the litany of cases spewed across the country, one wonders if indeed, the committee will deliver on its mandate before the party’s national convention.
